Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Team While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad selection update

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has included captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy misses out.

The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to play against New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the first Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are also absent because of injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new member in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".

Following facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players set to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran group of centre options. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of his province's three United Rugby Championship matches this season and played in the second string's loss by England in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a cap.

Southern province lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions matches over the summer, is poised to deputise for Doris should the captain fails to recover full fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on the following day.
