Labuschagne Omitted from Australian ODI Lineup Versus Team India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from the three-game ODI series versus India, as high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected selection.

Performance Issues Lead to Omission

The right-hander was left out from the ODI side following being dismissed for one in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a best innings of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.

The batsman has featured in 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes

There have been indications of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia search for a fix to their top-order woes.

Bowling Returns and Fitness Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he works to regain fitness from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
